Current Characters: N/A
Character: Naminé
Canon: Kingdom Hearts. Her canon point is right as she’s merging with Kairi at the end of KH2. CRAU from Vestige, a horror game.
Age: 15 (biologically) and 1 (chronologically) at her canon point, plus a few months from Vestige.
Background Information: The wiki article for her is here.
CRAU: In addition to her canon experiences, this version of Naminé has spent a few months in a containment zone in the horror game Vestige. The setting of that RP was a The Cabin in the Woods-like situation in which characters were placed there by a group of shady scientists to suffer in order to appease ancient gods and thereby prevent the apocalypse.
In the course of said game, she experienced several threatening situations such as being chased after or menaced by a variety of monsters, having one of her limbs slowly turn into glass, getting confronted by some of her fears from the past, dealing with both friendly and very unfriendly ghosts, and being lost in a snowstorm as well as snowed in with no access to power or heating. Through one of the special events, she also caught a brief glimpse of multiple alternate universe versions of herself, which she found thoroughly disconcerting due to the fact that some of those branching paths of reality entailed situations that she would not have previously believed to be possible, in both good ways and bad ones. Perhaps understandably, these experiences have collectively made her a little more wary and on-edge than she already was, and she’s now more likely to react quickly to any sort of threat. That being said, a place like that really makes one appreciate a nice, comfortable dreamworld…
Aside from the horror-related developments, Naminé was able to build a variety of positive relationships and a few friendships with other characters, and in doing so became somewhat more used to being around people than she was before, given her isolated life in canon. Being stuck in a dangerous situation together provided her a certain sense of community and encouraged her natural inclination to try to help the others around her when she could. Although she did not recall any memories of having been in another world beside Vestige’s, she was told by multiple people that she’d lived in a place called Asgard prior to coming to the containment zone, and by the end of her development there she had accepted that this was probably true. Since it sounded like a much nicer place than the one she was in during Vestige, she was quite curious about it and longed to remember or learn what she could about that other world. Ultimately, she discovered relatively little.
Due to the frightening manner of place she found herself in, Naminé began to put effort into learning more practical forms of magic while she was there, such as basic elemental spells like Fire and simple healing in the form of Cure. Since she was doing so without any significant instruction or a proper teacher, it took a while for her to learn, but as of her development in Vestige, she can now use Fire reliably, if with perhaps less control than she would like. Cure is also functional, but a bit touch and go, and she’s started on a few of the other elemental spells as well.
Overall, this version of Naminé has a few more unpleasant memories as well as a greater number of happy ones, and both sets have helped her grow into someone even more patient and determined than before. Physically and magically she’s that much more capable than her canon counterpart, and as such will put forth her best effort to look after the people around her, just in case this whole ‘dream’ business turns out to be some kind of long con by the Technicians.
Personality:
- Compassionate - One of the defining aspects of Naminé’s character is her compassion for and willingness to help others, even at great cost to herself. Despite her upbringing surrounded by people who tried to encourage her to act selfishly, she witnessed such kindness in Sora’s heart that she refused to continue harming him, and thereafter allowed him to forget her in order to regain his own memories, regardless of the fact that it cost her the only almost-friend she’d ever had in a life that was otherwise quite unpleasant. With power like hers she could easily have taken what she wanted, but she chose not to in favor of respecting Sora’s wishes.
- Lonely - Because of her role in both ruining and restoring Sora’s memories, Naminé spent most of her existence unbelievably isolated, not only by the Organization but later through her own choice in order to complete her work and make sure Sora would be able to wake up again. Add to that the fact that during the entire length of her life she’s had much happier memories than her own dangled in front of her, and you’ve got one sad young lady. She craves close relationships with others but has always been forced to refuse herself that wish, and as such there’s a melancholy way about her that never seems to leave her entirely.
- Reserved - Likely quiet by nature, she’s only been made more so by a life spent in the presence of individuals who treated her coldly and taught her that she was no more than half a person. Positive interactions with others have been few and far between, and maintaining her silence has been a crucial part of her survival at various points in her existence, so Naminé has learned to keep her distance, especially around strangers.
- Perceptive - Due to her extensive knowledge of the hearts of others, she’s skilled at reading and predicting the actions of those around her. It doesn’t take much for her to catch on, and she’s got quite the intellect to boot; even in the beginning of her life, she was able to construct believable memories despite having little to no actual experience with the events involved, and has been shown to come up with inventive ways to reach her goals, such as hijacking data with her powers. She’s one smart cookie.
- Understanding - Naminé displays no end of patience and understanding when it comes to dealing with others, and even treats those who have wronged her with considerably more objectivity than many could manage. When asked by Roxas if the Organization is a bad group, she states that she doesn’t know, and explains their goals in about as sympathetic a way as can be. Considering how they treated her, that’s awfully generous; at no point does she display any desire for revenge, and she consistently accepts and respects the decisions of others even when they’re to her detriment.
- Resilient - As a Nobody, Naminé is a being that could not exist if not for the fact that she was created by a heart with an incredibly strong will. No matter how thoroughly unpleasant her life has been, she never seems to break. Without any real support structure of family or friends, she soldiers on to try to do right by others even when it means giving up what she wants most. Given everything she’s been through, she’s a force to be reckoned with, even if she might not look like much on the outside.
- Honest - After spending the first part of her life forced to plant lies in another person’s heart, Naminé seems to prefer honesty to the point of bluntness, and can sometimes be too straightforward, upsetting others – about which she’s contrite, of course. Against DiZ’s wishes, she chooses to relate the truth to both Xion and Roxas so that they can make better-informed decisions about their situations. (Despite this, she also seems willing to withhold portions of the truth, like the details about the extent of her involvement in Roxas’ situation; chances are this is because she knew telling him the details might undermine her being able to help him come to terms with his position.)
- Meddlesome - Naminé seems either unwilling or unable to leave the people around her to their own troubles. Invariably, she seeks to help – whether it’s Sora, or Riku, or Roxas—Xion, Ventus, Aqua, Terra… it doesn’t seem to matter whether she’s met them by that point or not. If she sees someone in need, chances are she’s going to try to assist them, whether obviously or in a more subtle fashion, like when she called Riku – who was in the guise of Xehanort’s Heartless - by his name in front of Kairi despite his obvious attempts to hide his identity and avoid her.
- Pragmatic - Although Kingdom Hearts is a game series that features a lot of very idealistic characters and notions, Naminé tends to have a much more grounded view of things than her companions, and will speak the truth plainly even when it’s an ugly one. She’s been encouraged to view things more hopefully and smile for the sake of others (as when Sora requests she do so while he’s in Castle Oblivion) but ultimately her natural bent is to take reality for what it is, like when she admits in The Final World that Roxas is the one everyone wants to see again, not Naminé herself. This can sometimes make her prone to little worries; she’s more concerned about the hows and whys than a lot of other characters seem to be, and tends to take a more cautious approach to most of what she does, analyzing her own decisions and sometimes adjusting her sentences in the middle, which can make her speech more stilted and awkward.
Abilities & Inventory:
- Because of the unique nature of her existence, Naminé is able to enter, change, and rearrange the memories of others. In addition, she can use her powers to create entirely new memories of things that never truly happened, cause people to forget things that did happen, and even ‘smash their heart’ entirely, putting them in a vegetable-like state. The exact details of this are not well explained in canon, but they seem to be specific to Sora and those around him. Obviously, this type of ability is not something to be used lightly in an RP setting, and would be limited to things discussed ahead of time with any players involved, or otherwise left up to them. ICly, Naminé is not especially inclined to try to use such abilities on others without consent or significant provocation.
- Due to the above powers, Naminé is also able to change and reshape objects, mess with data (inside a book or computer), and potentially alter her own appearance as well. Since this ties in to the theme of Songerein, in her case it might translate to her having a considerable head-start where adjusting the world around her is concerned, as that’s pretty much a part of her skillset already.
- As a Nobody, Naminé is able to create portals of darkness to allow her or anyone else who passes through them to move from place to place quickly. In canon, she uses this ability rarely, and obviously in a game setting it would have to be limited to movement within whatever location they’re currently stuck in.
- In the world of Kingdom Hearts, magic seems to be pretty widespread, since there are various party members available throughout the game who can use it. As someone who already has a form of magic, Naminé likely also possesses the potential to use a broad range of spells. In Vestige, she’s already started exploring this, and has learned a few basic offensive and defensive magic skills as a result.
Due to the fact that Naminé is canonically a very powerful character, please let me know if any more extensive nerfs of her abilities are required.
Suitability & Plans: Although she’s likely to meet the game’s setting with some skepticism, that won’t limit her willingness to participate in it, and given her built-in skillset she’s well-prepared to take to any sort of dream manipulation quite easily. Regarding the matter of castmates, although Naminé does benefit a lot from the company of other characters from her canon, I’ve played her as a lone canon warrior more than enough times to know that she builds CR and finds purpose through it steadily regardless of whether or not anyone from her series is around. She has enough work to do on herself that she can function independently of canonmates without trouble. For Songerein, I’m particularly interested in the dreamshift aspect, as I’d like to explore her being put into new roles that she may or may not be equipped for.
As a character that’s grown up in a bad situation and spent most of their time isolated from others, Naminé is always starting from square one where personal experience is concerned. Even with the addition of her CRAU, she has a lot of room to try new things and benefits tremendously from all manner of relationships that she might acquire, both negative and positive. She’s got a lot to learn about being a person, and since she’s not yet aware of the fact that she can be one due to her canon point, there’s a long road ahead for her. Ideally, I’d like to explore her misgivings in that area and eventually have her start allowing herself to become more ‘real,’ as it were, with all the growing pains that might result from that. Pretty much everything is a step up from her past, so it doesn’t take a lot for her to want to involve herself in all manner of shenanigans, especially if they lead to assisting others.
Because of her helpful nature, Naminé generally serves as a pretty solid ‘spiritual guide,’ and can use her calming demeanor to help other characters grow or adjust to the setting if they’re resistant to it. She’s proven to be skilled at encouraging harder or more standoffish characters to soften, if only slightly, and be more open to others. Ultimately this depends on what kind of CR she winds up building, but she does make a darn good therapist in just about any context.
